The short answer is “Yes”.
The slightly longer answer is “Yes, but only a couple dozen. And when they’re gone, that is it until Fall 2014″.
The Complete Answer
…we were so naive! When it became clear that we wouldn’t meet demand without ordering more, we suddenly began to understand the challenges of manufacturing in Nepal between October and December. For Rajan, our manufacturer, these challenges included:
- 2-week country-wide shutdown for the annual Nepali fall festivals (Dashain and Tihar)
- 13-day strike and civil unrest in protest of the announced
- 4-day power disruption on Rajan’s street for electrical work. 4 full days!
- 6 hours maximum of electricity each 24 hours due to the poor power infrastructure. (No matter our life challenges, we have it pretty good.)
And, last but definitely not least, we pretty much ran out of steam since we work on Jackets for Jasper before and after our regular jobs.
So….we tried, but we will not be bringing in any new jackets this season. However, now that Christmas has come and gone, we’ve had a few exchanges and returns and so we have a limited number of jackets for sale. To try be as fair as possible to locals and people who live far away, we have made our remaining stock available on the Web store (we can only ship in Canada). Deep Cove Outdoors still has a few jackets, too.
But once these few jackets are gone, they are GONE.
“Are you going to do this again next year”?
This is a question we have been asked again and again. It is also a question we have often asked ourselves as we worked on J4J before work, until very late each night and all through the weekends.
It has shocked us how much time it takes to run this very small business. Between work and J4J work, we have had little time for all the other aspects in our lives that are important such as friends, family, cooking, exercise, etc. We needed to find a life/work/J4J balance that is sustainable for us to continue doing this.
However, we really, reallllly like what we (and you) are doing together. We might not cure a disease or create world peace (not yet, anyway!), but we are making a difference in a few kids’ and their families’ lives. And that is important. And maybe we can do more good together if we keep at it?
So, with lots of talking and a glass or two of wine, we’ve got a plan to improve our work-life balance and:
We will continue Jackets for Jasper in 2014.
You have given us great encouragement and suggestions … jackets with hoods, perhaps? Or maybe the ultimate down leisure-wear for a night on the town (ha ha!).
We will keep you posted and also request your assistance as we move forward into the new year. We couldn’t have done and can’t do this without the incredible support we have received from you during the last year-and-a-half. We are looking forward to Jackets for Jasper in 2014 and are excited about the possibilities!
